Rimasto orfano della madre a nove anni, Karol Wojtyla (Piotr Adamczyk) lo incontriamo ventenne, studente universitario a Cracovia, nel 1939, testimone dell'occupazione nazista della Polonia. Dapprima fuggiasco col padre nelle campagne, poi costretto a tornare a Cracovia per la disfatta dell'esercito polacco ad Est, Karol, contrario all'uso della violenza, tenta di opporsi agli invasori con la scrittura di drammi, il pellegrinaggio alla Basilica della Madonna Nera, ed il teatro clandestino.
